FitSwim

Project Overview
Introducing FitSwim, the groundbreaking wearable that redefines swim tracking and health monitoring. Unlike traditional wristbands or armbands, FitSwim breaks the mold by ingeniously attaching to the swimmer's ankle with an adjustable band. Designed with swimmers' preferences in mind, FitSwim offers a seamless and comfortable experience, allowing you to focus on your performance in the water.

Success Metrics

Our product vision for FitSwim is to elevate the swimming experience by delivering a user-centric solution that enhances user satisfaction, performance, and well-being. By addressing usability issues and aligning with FitSwim's core concept of revolutionizing swimming and health tracking, we aim to create a seamless and enjoyable user experience that empowers swimmers of all levels to reach their full potential.

Research

Research on FitSwim's tear-shaped design involves user testing and feedback to evaluate its comfort, stability, and hydrodynamic efficiency in swimming activities. The findings guide iterative design refinements, ensuring an optimal fit and performance-enhancing profile. Additionally, research on displaying health data focuses on user preferences and comprehension, informing the selection of clear, intuitive visual styles that prioritize essential information for swimmers' understanding and decision-making.

First Prototype

FitSwim's first prototype consists of an adjustable ankle band with embedded sensors for capturing precise performance data. The accompanying app serves as a user-friendly hub, providing real-time feedback, progress visualization, and personalized training recommendations. This proof-of-concept showcases FitSwim's potential to revolutionize swimming and health tracking, with ongoing improvements guided by user feedback and research.

My Work

As a UX professional, I created wireframes for FitSwim, a project focused on heart rate monitoring and healthcare statistics. I conducted HIPAA research to ensure compliance and designed intuitive interfaces. By prioritizing user input and employing effective data visualization, I contributed to a valuable wearable concept.

FitSwim takes extensive measures to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of health data collected through the wearable and app. These measures include:

  1. Secure Data Transmission: FitSwim implements encryption protocols to safeguard the transmission of health data between the wearable and the app, ensuring that data remains confidential during transfer.
  2. Robust Data Storage: FitSwim employs secure servers and storage systems to safeguard health data, utilizing encryption and access controls to prevent unauthorized access or breaches.
  3. User Consent and Authorization: FitSwim obtains user consent to collect and process health data, ensuring that users are fully informed about the purpose and scope of data collection. FitSwim respects user preferences and provides options to control data sharing and access.

Iterations

1 ~ Onboarding

In designing the onboarding experience for FitSwim, our key principles were efficiency and data collection. We struck a balance by creating a visually consistent and fluid interface. Additionally, users have the option to log in through Google or other means for a faster process. The step-by-step onboarding also includes basic information like height and weight for more accurate tracking, although users can choose to skip this step if desired, resulting in less quality data but still providing effective functionality.

2 ~ Dashboard and Notifications

The dashboard and notification systems of the FitSwim app were designed with simplicity in mind, delivering relevant information to users. On the dashboard, users can quickly view single values for heart rate, calories, steps, and sleep. Swimming data provides in-depth and detailed information. Notifications keep users informed about their goals and monitoring rates. Goals are personalized based on their health app or FitSwim's recommended values. The calendar feature enables easy navigation through daily, weekly, or monthly data summaries. Thus with all these features cognitive load, user-centered design, and all were in mind.

3 ~ Scheduling Lessons and Calendar

In the FitSwim app, a crucial functionality identified for swimmers was the ability to track workouts and schedule training sessions. The app offers a comprehensive range of swimming motions and drills for users to choose from or create their own custom moves. These workouts can be seamlessly added to the user's calendar, allowing them to easily manage and modify their schedule on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. This focus on workout tracking and scheduling ensures that users can maintain a consistent training routine and effectively monitor their progress over time.

4 ~ Connecting to Healthcare Provider (HIPAA)

In the later sections of the app, we focused on allowing healthcare providers to access users' health information. This feature enables providers to monitor fluctuations, gain insights into users' overall well-being, and provide personalized care based on accurate data. FitSwim empowers users to have a comprehensive view of their health and facilitates seamless information sharing with healthcare professionals.

Challenges and Response

Challenges

With developing for FitSwim the biggest challenges were:

  • Ensuring HIPAA compliance while handling sensitive healthcare data
  • Balancing the need for intuitive user interfaces with complex data representation
  • Addressing technical constraints and limitations of wearable technology
  • Response

In which I adapted to the situation through:

    - Implement strong encryption algorithms to protect sensitive data transmitted and stored by FitSwim.

    - Simplify the interface by prioritizing essential information and functionality while minimizing clutter.

    - Conduct research on swimming material and additional movemnts of ankles and forms that allow for fluid movements

    Conclusion

FitSwim is an innovative wearable and app ecosystem that revolutionizes swimming performance tracking and goal achievement. Through user-centric design, extensive research, and iterative development, FitSwim empowers swimmers to reach their full potential. Despite being a school project, valuable insights were gained in user-centered design, physical prototyping, and privacy considerations (HIPAA).
